“I photograph with the intention of transporting the viewer to a location, to become part of the activity, to be as though you can feel & smell the salty air -to feel alive!” - BK
Mark Rothko explained in a 1951 symposium that the scale was an enormous important factor for him. That he painted on such a large scale not in order to produce something grandiose and pompus but rather to help place the viewer inside of it. That is exactly what I do.
Brian Kendall grew up just outside of Detroit, Michigan, spending his summers along the lakes, drawn both to the surf and the beachgoers as well as the solitude. A graduate of University of Michigan, he moved to Los Angeles in the fall of 1993 where he met & worked with the likes of Herb Ritts, Melvin Sokolysky & Cliff Watts, honing his craft. Brian shoots both film & digital medium formats to create these living landscapes, finding the beauty in the synthesis of man, nature and the man-made. He crafts an idealized image of the emotional experience one has when surrounded in these.
